Let me say this as loud and as clear as I can (no caps, I hate that) - why should we even have to wonder? Why should we even be having this discussion? The technology is there to totally eliminate any question of whether they changed votes or counted them or not.
The freakin government has made our financial system the best on earth for every single person or entity who wants to participate in it. It doesn't matter if you have $.10 in it or $10Bn. You can follow every last cent. Assuming that your accounting is good enough you have no doubt that you can follow the money and the path is there.
Think about how many financial accounts we have available and use. It's awesome that it works so well and that we can have near-total trust in it. Shouldn't we have the same trust in our vote? Good god what's so hard about this?
Sure we're not going to deal with disenfranchisement but would there be anywhere near the controversy if this is what we were worrying about? With disenfrancisement we can mobilize and do something about it by being poll watchers and volunteering to get voters to the polls. We can do a lot to make sure there are enough machines in all precincts.
In short, we can feel some measure of control over the process even if it's sometimes an illusion.
With vote changing, vote count modification there's absolutely nothing we can do and that leads to a whole host of negative consequences for us individually and as a society.
So, I'm asking again - why should I even have to worry about this? Just freakin fix the problem. Stop talking about whether there is a problem or not. Just fix it.
